CARA APPEALS BOARD UPHOLDS ‘R’ RATING FOR “MY FAKE BOYFRIEND”

LOS ANGELES – The Classification and Rating Administration (CARA)’s Appeals Board unanimously voted today to uphold the ‘R’ rating given to the film “My Fake Boyfriend.” The movie is rated ‘R’ for sexual material and language.
Richard Reid, Head of Studio & EVP, Global Content at BuzzFeed Inc., and Michael Philip, a Producer on “My Fake Boyfriend,” represented the appellant, Fake BF Film Inc. Kelly McMahon, Chair of CARA, and Tracey Downs, Senior Rater and Filmmaker Liaison, represented the rating board.

About the Appeals Process:
The Classification and Rating Administration’s Appeals Board is made up of members of the industry knowledgeable about the distribution and exhibition of motion pictures and whose sole mission is to maintain the integrity of the voluntary ratings system. A successful appeal requires a decisive two-thirds majority affirming that the rating is “clearly erroneous.” The overriding objective of the appeals process is to ensure that the rating system remains consistent and therefore credible. The Board reviews approximately 500-600 films each year. This is the first appeal since 2020. Prior to that, on average, only one to five films were appealed per year.
